Things to Avoid After Dental Implant Surgery
March 17, 2025 9:00 amYou did it—you got your dental implant! Now, the focus shifts to healing properly so your implant settles in for the long haul. While the procedure itself is a big step, what you do (or don’t do) in the days that follow can make all the difference. At Caring Smiles Dental in Hoffman Estates, IL, Dr. Ankur Patel shares the top things to avoid so your recovery stays smooth and complication-free.
1. Skipping Rest—Take It Easy!
Your body needs time to heal. Jumping right back into work, intense workouts, or heavy lifting can slow down recovery. Rest, relax, and let your body do its thing.
What to do instead: Take it easy for the first 24-48 hours and avoid strenuous activity for at least a few days.
2. Eating Crunchy or Hard Foods
Biting into a chip, nut, or crunchy snack too soon can put unnecessary pressure on your implant site and slow healing.
What to do instead: Stick to soft foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, and scrambled eggs for the first few days.
3. Drinking Through a Straw
Suction from using a straw can dislodge the blood clot that’s helping your gum heal. This can lead to painful complications like dry socket.
What to do instead: Drink directly from a cup and skip carbonated drinks for now—they can irritate the implant site.
4. Smoking or Using Tobacco Products
Smoking slows healing, increases infection risk, and can even cause implant failure. Nicotine reduces blood flow, making it harder for your body to recover.
What to do instead: If you’re a smoker, consider this a great time to quit—or at least avoid smoking during recovery.
5. Poking or Prodding the Implant Site
It might feel weird or different, but don’t touch the area with your tongue or fingers. This can introduce bacteria and delay healing.
What to do instead: Keep the area clean but undisturbed. Follow your dentist’s instructions for rinsing and brushing around the implant.
6. Ignoring Pain or Swelling That Gets Worse
Some discomfort and swelling are normal, but if the pain worsens after a few days, something could be wrong.
What to do instead: Call your dentist if you have increasing pain, excessive bleeding, or signs of infection like fever or pus.
